Product Information
The first BMX game to feature a storyline, Toxic Grind finds players riding to save their lives in a futuristic obstacle course designed for audience entertainment. Talented rider Jason Hayes is surreptitiously teleported into the year 2097 so he can appear in a dangerous contest he was never meant to win. Using Hayes’ abilities on a BMX bike, players must navigate the game’s 11 levels while completing various skill-based objectives to ensure survival. The title comes from the injection Hayes receives upon entering the contest, a toxin that will gradually kill him unless he can finish the show as quickly as possible.
The toxin’s effects, represented by an on-screen meter, can be slowed by adrenaline. Boosting adrenaline is a matter of performing tricks while pedaling across the dangerous arenas. Goals range from destroying a helicopter and sinking a ship to blowing up a control room and deactivating bombs. Players must also avoid hazards such as cannons, spinning saw blades, spikes, and other threats. Some of the environments players will encounter include an oilrig, scrap yard, aquarium, and various outdoor mazes. The ultimate goal is to put an end to host Dixon Von Blass’ gruesome game show so Hayes can be cured and safely return home.
To help in his quest, members of a resistance movement have placed various power-ups within the arenas, including magnet pegs for perfect balance while grinding, super spins to increase points, anti-gravity feathers to remain in the air longer, protective shields, extra lives, and anti-toxins, which reduce the poison by 75 percent. Other modes of play include an Arcade Mode, which lets players choose one of ten characters, a bike, an arena, and the length of time to compete. Pro Circuit Mode involves competing against other riders for the highest score in a six-arena contest.
Toxic Grind also features a Multiplayer Mode where two friends can compete in the following four events: Quick Draw, Score War, Turf War, and Tug-of-War. Quick Draw is a race to see who can reach a fixed number of points, while Score War involves scoring as many points as possible within a one-, two-, or five-minute run. Turf War consists of “tagging” surfaces by tricking off them, with the winner being the one who tags the most areas by the end of the time limit. Tug-of-War has both players beginning with an adjustable number of points and then stealing each other’s scores by copying tricks.
