Description
As the name implies, “Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction” for the PlayStation 2 is all about causing chaos. You’ll take control of one of three different characters as you look to capture more than four dozen wanted fugitives. Set in North Korea, this game has you taking missions from a multitude of factions. Every faction, from the armies of South Korea to the Russian mafia, has a job for you. Along the way, you’ll inadvertently prevent a nuclear war while lining your pockets full of cash. “Mercenaries” was developed by Pandemic Studios and published by Electronic Arts. At its core, “Mercenaries” shares a lot of the same engaging elements of the “Grand Theft Auto” franchise. Gameplay takes place in an open-world setting; if you can see a location, you can travel to it. You can hijack all manner of vehicles in this title, ranging from jeeps to tanks. The third-person viewpoint lets you see the action around you at all times. On foot, you’ll wield weapons ranging from pistols to rocket launchers against your foe. There are five total factions in “Mercenaries” for the PlayStation 2. Gameplay involves carefully balancing the factions against one another. For example, if you complete too many missions for the mafia, the Allied Nations may turn against you. It’s impossible to get locked out of any particular group, though. By bribing the faction guard, you can completely reset your standing. You’ll need to do this frequently to take on all of the missions because they eventually lead you to your targets. The primary objective in “Mercenaries” is to complete the Deck of 52. Each card in this set corresponds to a wanted fugitive that you need to capture. You can take these outlaws either dead or alive. Each fugitive you take down will unlock new weapons for you to use. At the top of each deck is an ace, with the Ace of Spades being the most-wanted criminal.Like other PS2 open-world games, this title has a variety of cheats for you to use. These cheats add to the game’s fun factor and will extend the replay value immensely. You can enter each code on your in-game handheld PDA at any time. One fun cheat allows you to play as Lucasfilm characters, including Indiana Jones and Han Solo. Other codes decrease the difficulty, like those that give you unlimited health and ammunition. The graphics in this title take full advantage of the PlayStation 2’s hardware. The draw distance in this game extends for a lengthy distance, meaning you can see ahead of your character for what appears to be miles. Even during times of multiple explosions and multiple enemies on the screen, there is no slowdown in this game. This title had some of the best graphics in 2005, even going on to win multiple awards. The game has a rating of T for its use of alcohol, strong language, and violence. If you’re in the mood to just blow up everything in your path, this video game fits the bill. With a campaign that is 25 to 30 hours long, you’ve got a lot of fun and destruction ahead of you.
